The annual Lower Merion Boys Lacrosse Alumni Day and Hall of Fame Induction will be held April 15, with the current Lower Merion High School boys lacrosse team hosting Pope John Paul ll High School in a contest beginning at 11:30 a.m. on Arnold Field.
At halftime, the Hall of Fame Class of 2023, which includes Jon Roitman (Class of 1984) and the 1984 Lower Merion boys lacrosse team, will be honored. In addition, all Lower Merion High School boys lacrosse alumni at the game who sign in will be recognized.
Roitman was a four year starter excelling as an all-purpose midfielder. He was considered to be a ground ball machine, a strong defensive player, a good feeder and a quick dodger. As a junior, he was an integral part of the 1983 Central League Championship team. As a senior co-captain, Roitman was considered the heart and soul of the team that won both the 1984 Central League title and the PSLA state championship.
The highlight of Roitman’s high school career was in his final game, the state championship game when he scored four goals. Three of these goals came within a span of 48 seconds in the first quarter opening up a Lower Merion lead which lasted for the entire game. The fourth goal came in the third quarter and was a momentum killer as Hill School had gone on a run of unanswered goals. The Aces won 9 -5, and Roitman was the game’s Most Valuable Player.
Roitman received first team All-Central League honors that year and played in the Pennsylvania Senior All-Star game. He went on to play one year at Lafayette College before transferring to The United States Military Academy at West Point, where he played for three years. Having used up his eligibility, in his fourth year at West Point, Roitman served as a volunteer assistant coach under head coach Jack Emmer.
The 1984 Lower Merion boys lacrosse team, which won both the Central League and Pennsylvania Scholastic Lacrosse Association championships, compiled 17 wins, (most ever in a single season in the 76-year history of Lower Merion lacrosse) and only one loss. The loss came at the hands of Long Island power Garden City High by the score of 8-7, one day after Lower Merion defeated Central League rival Springfield.
