MOUNT OLIVE — As Ronan Valli and David McNamara walked up the first fairway at Flanders Valley Golf Course on Thursday afternoon, Valli said, “This is what we wanted. I’ll take us against any team in this county.”
Valli, a Chatham senior, was talking about the one-hole playoff to decide the Morris County Tournament. The Cougars faced off against Madison, after both foursomes finished with 305 total strokes on the white and blue courses.
The top two players on each team made up a new pairing, and went out to No. 1 Blue.
Valli and McNamara came up one stroke ahead of Dodgers senior Devan Patel and his younger brother, Alex. As the skies opened and thunder rumbled over the second set of golfers’ playoff putts, Chatham edged out Madison by two strokes.
It is the Cougars’ first MCT golf title since 2019, after finishing second in each of the past two seasons. The Chatham girls golf team won their own MCT title a week ago.
“I was a little nervous, but all that matters is we won,” said Chatham senior Owen Bedell, who shot a 75 in regulation to place seventh and double bogeyed the playoff hole. “I made the putt, and that’s what counts.”
Montville junior Eli Kaufman shot a 3-under 69 to take the individual title. Alex Patel and Kinnelon senior Avery Cohen tied for second with even par 72s, with Patel taking the spot on a match of cards.

All four Madison players had also been in a playoff for the NJSIAA Group 2 title last spring, losing to Cranford on the first hole.
“It’s definitely nice to have experience going out there,” Devan Patel said, as Alex Patel added, “It’s kinda nervewracking, just watching and waiting.”
