STOWE TOWNSHIP, Pa. —

As students return to class in the Sto-Rox School District in about two weeks, armed security guards will join them in the halls.

“A lot of people can put on a badge or a weapon and say, ‘Yes, I’m security,’ but can you win the hearts and minds of kids? Can you win these kids over, and actually talk to them, get to know them for who they are?” said Cameron Culliver, the school board president.

Leaders chose the new company, Signal, among bids from several companies after putting out a request for proposal at the end of last school year.

Signal has brought on a handful of security guards who have previously worked in the schools.

“We are very pleased that a number of the guards that were here last year are coming back,” said Megan Van Fossan, the district superintendent. “They have wonderful relationships with kids. They can easily de-escalate.”
