Alice Cecilia (née Dugan) Boyle, affectionately known as Cookie, of Spring Lake, NJ, returned to the Lord on November 9, 2023. Cookie was born on March 1, 1929, in Bayonne, NJ, to Caroline (O’Donnell) and James Dugan, natives of Donegal, Ireland. She was raised in Bayonne attending St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic School, Holy Family Academy, and John Marshall College. She married George E. Boyle on April 5, 1951. They moved to Spring Lake in 1958 to raise their family. Cookie worked at the Spring Lake Bath and Tennis Club for thirty-five years. After retirement, Cookie and George enjoyed many years together sharing time between Spring Lake and Marco Island, Florida.
Cookie, the fun-loving matriarch of the Boyle family, was deeply devoted to her family and the causes dearest to her heart. She was a past PTA secretary for St. Catharine’s School, Spring Lake, and an active member of the Red Bank Catholic and St. Rose High School PTAs. Cookie was a dynamic member of Pro-Life and the San Marco Church Pro-Life in Florida. She was a member of the Third Order Carmelites of St. Catharine’s Church and a member of the Marian Movement for Priest Prayer Group in Sea Girt. She was a Past Regent of the Catholic Daughters Court of St. Margaret’s and the Court of St. Denis, Manasquan.
Her six children survive her: Mary Jean Lame, SLH; Jacqueline and Michael Mangini, Wall and Fernandina Beach, Florida; Neil Boyle, Plymouth, MA; Caroline and Kenneth DeWyngaert, Rumson; James and Kitty Boyle, Steamboat Springs, CO; and Margaret Mary and Denis Smith, Spring Lake. She was predeceased by her husband of seventy years George E. (Popop) Boyle in February 2022, her son George E.Boyle, Jr., and her son-in-law Robert J.Lame. She is also predeceased by her three sisters: Rose Murphy, Caroline Sweeney, Marie Finn, and their spouses.
Her twenty grandchildren will deeply mourn Nanny Cookie: Erin (Lame) and Colin Quinn, Robert Lame, Christopher Mangini, Matthew (Lindsay) Boyle, Sara (Michael) Nichols, Rachel DeWyngaert, K.Connor DeWyngaert, Devin DeWyngaert, Kevin Boyle, Patrick Boyle, Neil Boyle, Michael Boyle, Jack Boyle, Kate Boyle, Maeve Smith, Stephen Smith, Brendan Smith, Caroline Smith, and Bridget Smith. And greatly missed by seven great-grandchildren: Colin Quinn, Dillon Quinn, Aidan Quinn, Padraig Quinn, Madeline Quinn, Scarlett Lame, and Harlan Boyle. She is also survived by her brother James J. Dugan, his wife Betty (Daneri), and many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Her family will miss her smile, sense of style, and endless love. She was an avid reader, a voracious shopper, and an impeccable dresser. She brightened the lives of all who knew her. She was immensely proud of her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Hwy 35 ay New Bedford Rd., Wall, on Wednesday, November 15 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. with a Funeral Mass at St. Catharine’s Church, 215 Essex Ave., Spring Lake on Thursday, November 16, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at St. Catharine’s Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, please give to Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia for Neuroblastoma research in honor of Bridget Smith, or the HMH Hospice Foundation.
